JOHOR BAHRU: The floods that hit several areas in Johor over the past week caused tens of thousands of residents throughout the southern state to be evacuated.
As of Wednesday morning (March 8), more than 40,000 Johor residents are still sheltering in temporary evacuation centers after they were forced to move out of their homes. Although the weather has been relatively good over the past few days, the number of flood victims in areas such as Batu Pahat, Muar and Tangkak has increased while the flood water level remains high.
Climate change advisor to the Center for Administrative and Political Studies (Cent-GPS), Dr Renard Siew shared a similar view. He emphasized the need for the authorities to ensure that the drainage system in the river is "maintained and properly managed".
According to him, the authorities also need to control the level of deforestation and industrial activities in areas prone to flooding, especially those close to rivers.
"Factors such as land use plans and zoning need to be regulated. So (this involves) limiting massive construction and development works in flood-prone areas because this will only worsen the situation after some time," said Dr Siew.
On Monday (March 6), Johor Menteri Besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi warned that even with brighter weather, Batu Pahat residents still need to be vigilant because river water from Segamat flows south and causes water levels to rise in some areas.
Batu Pahat was the worst affected district in Johor, with over 27,000 people evacuated.
Yong Peng State Assembly Member, Mr Ling Tian Soon told Mediacorp on Monday that the main reason why many areas in Batu Pahat were flooded was due to overflowing water from Sungai Bekok.
He agreed that more mitigation efforts could be done on the Bekok dam to prevent water from overflowing.
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim recently announced a fund of RM600 million (S$179 million) allocated for flood reduction projects in three areas of Johor, namely Batu Pahat, Segamat and Kota Tinggi.
GARBAGE DISPOSAL MAY RESULT IN CLOGGED DRAINAGE SYSTEMS
Experts also told Mediacorp that river pollution caused by dumping may play a role in causing the drainage system to become clogged.
Dr Siew from Cent-GPS pointed out that some residents, especially from village areas, tend to throw garbage in nearby rivers and this harms the drainage system.
"Many villagers have a habit of throwing everything into the river and this causes the drains that are meant to smooth the flow of water, to be blocked," said Dr Siew.
